Wallflowers

PROCESS || Digital photos printed onto negatives, cotton fabric coated by brush in 1:1 cyanotype solution, negative and coated fabric sandwiched together into a frame, exposed in UV light, developed and oxidized, dried and mounted on embroidery hoops. Dried florals stitched to the pieces and embellished with colored floss to complement the piece.

Cyanotype was the process I fell in love with during a semester long research class. We tested theories, experimented as homework, learned how to perfect digital negatives, created and curated our own series from start to finish. I consumed blue in so many different art forms; the winter, Blue by Joni Mitchell, and the book Bluets by Maggie Nelson.

Bluets is a memoir that explores how blue has shown up in her life and it really sparked the connection to Cyanotype.

Alternative process is a non-traditional printing technique to create unique prints or art pieces. Some techniques that are still used today are some of the earliest printing techniques. Cyanotype was how the original blueprint was made! In expensive and fast prints compared to other techniques at the time.

I dedicated so much of my time to learning, practicing and researching all kinds of printing techniques under my [very cool] professor, Christina Z Anderson.

While I am not currently practicing, I feel really connected to my series Wallflowers and find it important to showcase my passion in making art.
